KEEPERS

Memory Keepers is an intergenerational storytelling and cultural learning program rooted in Wadmalaw Island, South Carolina. Through oral history, photography, filmmaking, land-based learning, creative practice, and time with elders, young people are invited to become stewards of memory by learning how to document, preserve, and carry forward the stories of Our communities.

The program is grounded in the belief that our histories live not only in books, but in everyday people, family traditions, foodways, faith, land, and the resilient ways Black communities have survived across generations. Memory Keepers teaches young people that their stories matter, and that preserving memory is a powerful act of care, protection, and legacy.

During the 2025–2026 school year at Edith Frierson Elementary, students explored storytelling through oral histories, photography, mapping, sensory memory exercises, drawing, and land-based learning rooted in the sea island.
